Marian (Mim)'s Story

Wow! It's challenging putting 50+ years in a little box and trying to start at the beginning... I was different. I didn't quite fit in where others did... Sort of like trying to fit a circle into a square hole. I wasn't a group person... I'm a loner and love to be by myself but didn't realize this until I matured which is the opposite of what high school personifies. So high school was difficult for me in that sense even though I was friendly with everyone. I did manage to have friends in many, many different groups. I was and still am very intuitive and quick thinking but tried never to show that to others because when I shared my intuitive side I was told I was wrong about this or that situation (even though everything I said came true, maybe not right away but it did and that's scary for a teenager) and therefore some people thought I was odd too and that's why I didn't fit into any specific group of people and I ended up moving from one group to another but I was more a loner than someone who needed to be with people... I only hope that along my path of awareness I didn't hurt others because that was never my intention. I was just a kid trying to find myself as we all were. I was always trying to be authentic to myself and to others. That was my belief then as it is now... but other than that I was a "normal" gawky teenager... was friendly with all groups of people in high school from freshman to seniors and greasers to collegiates and those in between. My brother was a greaser as were his friends. And since he was older there were always lots of kids at our house. I was on the gymnastics team in school and had always been active throughout high school and have even carried this into my adult life with running 5K's and running...Expand for more
in the neighborhood until I could no longer run. But you couldn't keep me down for long... I will always find something else to do! I did go to college but not until I was 50 and got my college degree at Northeastern Illinois University and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a double major in Social Justice and Liberal Arts. And, again, not having a degree when I was younger didn't keep me down either, I always feel you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to! I have three son's and two grandchildren. I have worked most of my adult life starting at the bottom and worked myself up to management. I worked from secretary to exhibit management to managing 50+ people in various states. I retired but it isn't in my nature to do nothing and sit around so I decided to get certified in yoga and I taught yoga at a neighborhood fitness center. I also use to volunteer once a week in a literacy program as well. Got my first tattoo at 60. Had to wait until my parents were gone before I did that... didn't want to deal with the backlash or be a "bad example" for my kids when they were younger. But putting that aside they are great adults and only one has a small tattoo so I guess my wild side didn't damage them too badly. Two have college degrees and the other one is an electrician that makes more money than the college graduates -- go figure. I also learned how to ride a motorcycle last fall at 65 and I now have an "M" on my license and I'm sooooooo loving it. Life is great and fulfilling. Just moved to a 55+ development in Illinois and I love it! Oh the benefits of growing "mature." LOL... we can do whatever we want... LOL!!!!!!!! I'm now on to my next adventure whatever that is... And, no matter what, I will 'KEEP ON TRUCKIN'..."
